Our prospect rankings objective, principles and criteria

January 27, 2012

This article covers who we consider as prospects, what we aim to accomplish with our prospect rankings and our ranking criteria.

Criteria

We consider any player with fewer than 130 career at-bats or 50.0 career innings pitched who has signed a contract with a MLB team and has not played professional baseball in anther country to be a prospect. We do, however, consider professional baseball players from other countries who sign before the age of 23 to be prospects.

Objective

Our lists are crafted with the goal of identifying prospects who have the potential to be MLB regulars for an extended period of time. We aim to idenfity as many stars as possible without missing on average big leaguers. Our target audience is people who are passionate about prospects, be it for personal enjoyment or career purposes.

Principles

We pride ourselves on providing high-quality, first-hand analysis. Our staff travels thousands of miles every year to see hundreds of baseball prospects with our own eyes. When we haven't seen a guy in person, we'll watch as much video of him as we can. We also love numbers and have put a lot of energy into exploring and understanfing the intricacies of statistical analysis. Combining our scouting knowledge with our statistical knowledge, we believe our work offers a one-of-a-kind look at elite amateurs, minor league talents and young big leaguers.
